Calculation Formula

Total Material Budget = sum[Quantity * (1 + Wastage %) * Local Rate] + Labour + Professional Fees + Contingency %
Where:
  • Effective Quantity: Raw Bill of Quantities * (1 + Material Wastage %)
  • Material Subtotal: Effective Quantity * Local User Rate per Unit
  • Wastage Cost: Quantity * (Wastage % / 100) * Local Rate
  • Project Budget: Total Materials + Labour Cost + Approvals/Consultancy + Contingency
  • Rate Sensitivity: Total Material Budget * (1 + Inflation Rate %)

Example Calculation

1,000 sq ft residential structure with 10 standard materials plus labour and 5% contingency

Built-up Area: 1,000 sq ft
Raw Material Cost: ₹10,41,400.00
Material Wastage Loss: ₹44,479.00
Total Material Budget: ₹10,85,879.00
Labour Cost: ₹3,50,000.00
Consultant & Permits: ₹55,000.00
Contingency (5%): ₹74,544.00
Outcome: Total Material Budget: ₹10,85,879.00 (₹1,085.88/sq ft) | Total Project Budget: ₹15,65,423.00 (₹1,565.42/sq ft) | +5% Inflation Impact: +₹54,294.00

With local entered rates, base material cost is ₹10,41,400. Adding ₹44,479 in site cutting/handling wastage gives a total material budget of ₹10,85,879.

Important Assumptions

  • All rates must be entered based on current local market procurement prices (no fabricated pricing).
  • Standard site wastage ranges between 3% to 8% depending on material handling efficiency.
  • Civil construction guidelines vary based on structural design, soil conditions, and finish grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is construction material cost calculated?

Cost is calculated by multiplying the estimated bill of quantities by your local supplier rate, adding site handling wastage allowance (3%-8%).

Are these live market prices?

No. The calculator does not fabricate live rates. It calculates deterministic quantities and costs using the exact market rates entered by the user.

How much wastage should I allow in construction?

Typically allow 3% for cement, 4% for TMT steel bar cutting, 5% for sand and aggregate, 6% for bricks, and 8% for tiles.

What is material cost per square foot?

It is the total material budget divided by the total built-up floor area in square feet.
